I often notice that people hesitate when asking about painting prices or commissioning a piece. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand what goes into the price of a painting.
Note: This is my personal approach. Prices may vary for other artists.
Update on 23rd August 2025:
I decided to post my artworks on Saatchi Art until I can launch my own store properly. This platform guarantees higher security for both buyers and me, but it takes 40% commission on all sales of originals. This is why my price has to go up once I publish my original on the platform – so I can sell the work at a price I initially planned.
If you reserve a piece while it’s in progress or during the drying process, I’ll keep the agreed price, as I don’t have to post it on Saatchi and give the site 40% of my earnings.
Thank you for understanding!
Materials
- Paints: Acrylic is generally cheaper than oil, but costs can add up – sometimes up to €200 per commission just for paints. Oil paints are often more expensive.
- Canvas: Canvases come in many types – blind-stretch, unstretched, rolls, 2D, 3D, boards, black or gold canvas – and quality affects price.
- Brushes & tools: Brushes wear out and need replacement; palettes, sprays, adhesives, and other tools are included in the cost.
- Special materials: Textured art may use structural paste, which is expensive and used in large amounts.
Time & Effort
Some paintings take a day, others a week or more. Planning, sketching, and execution all take time, and during that period, I work exclusively on the artwork.
Canvas size and complexity also affect pricing. Smaller canvases can require as much effort as larger ones, especially when detailed work is involved.
Framing & Presentation
Every painting includes a wax seal, is carefully wrapped, and may include a small gift like bookmarks or stickers.
Marketing
Promoting my work on social media requires paid ads. While individual ad costs are modest, they add up over a month. This investment is reflected in the pricing, helping my paintings reach collectors and art lovers.
Flexibility & Agreements
I always welcome discussions about budget. I can offer options for canvas, size, and materials to create a painting that fits your space and style.
Longevity
Oil paintings on canvas are archival and can last for generations. I consider this when pricing, as the artwork is meant to be enjoyed by your children and grandchildren.
Taxes
Currently, I pay about 25% of sales as author’s royalties tax, in accordance with local regulations.
Final Notes
Art should bring joy to every home. That’s why I offer both affordable options and premium gallery-style pieces, including prints you can order on Art Pal.
